Depending on where you live, some of you are playing golf frequently. Those of us less fortunate are counting down the days until the snow melts and the season starts.
Regardless of which group you fall into, we asked the guys over at Shot Scope for five tips to make 2025 your best season yet.
As we work through the list, you will see the tips are all interconnected. Instead of being five individual tips, this list is more like a recipe for better golf.
Here are the ingredients.
See a coach
Of course, there will be golfers who are “self-taught” and, despite never taking a lesson in their lives, play to a high standard. Those folks are few and far between.
For most of us, working with a coach will help us improve our golf games but it’s important to understand that coaching isn’t a one-off, one-hour fix. Coaching is a process but if you make the commitment, you’ll be able to make some serious swing changes/improvements.
This comes at a cost but better golf often requires some investment. The reality is you’re likely to get a better return on your investment with a coaching package than a new driver. Sorry, but it’s true.
There is always a cost to better golf: money, time or, on occasion, sanity.
Set SMART goals

With your new coach, it would be wise to set some goals for the season to work towards but ensure they are SMART: Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Relevant. Time-dependent.
An example of a SMART goal that might motivate you to take your game to new levels could be to break 70/80/90/100 before the end of the season (dependent on your ability).
You can set as many goals as you like. Perhaps some will be short-term and others long-term but setting them is a good way to drive your game forward and focus your attention.
How will you achieve them?
Hit the range

So you have a coach and some goals. Now it’s time to get those reps in!
Head to the range and work on whatever swing changes you may have to help ingrain them before heading out onto the course. Going from a lesson straight to the course is a recipe for disaster.
It is also worth bearing in mind that sometimes things can feel like they are getting worse before they get better which is why it is essential to get the reps in ahead of your Saturday morning tee time.
If you want to maximize the improvements to your game, you need to use performance tracking technology.
Start tracking your stats

Tracking your stats will allow your coach to see the areas of your game that are costing you strokes. Your coaching plan then can be tailored to the areas of your game that will yield the biggest improvements.
It will make the setting of SMART goals easier and allow you to monitor your progress towards them with ease.
With Shot Scope not only do you get Strokes Gained data on tee shots, approach play, short game and putting, you also get Handicap Benchmarking which allows you to see how you compare to players of a similar level or better.
You can also look at how your club selection is impacting scoring and use that information, as well as the MyStrategy feature, to make better decisions on the course.
MyStrategy is the data-driven strategy builder that allows golfers to create their very own strategy for any one of the 36,000 courses mapped worldwide. Course guides are a thing of the past with this technology.
Fun fact: On average, Shot Scope users save 4.1 strokes after 30 recorded rounds.
Lastly (and one of the most important components in this recipe for better golf), relax.
Relax a little

When things are going wrong, sometimes the harder you try, the worse it gets.
Although we encourage you to set goals like breaking 80, it is important not to focus on your final score when playing. Instead, focus on each shot and stick to the process you created with your coach. Those lower scores will come.
Last season, we shared an interesting Shot Scope stat that shows that, on average, golfers are 0.13 strokes better on the back nine compared to the front nine.
Many of you replied, saying difference was a result of two things:
- You had warmed up by that point and could swing more freely.
- You wrecked your score on the front nine and stopped caring.
No. 2 was by far the most common answer. Perhaps there is something in that: stop caring so much and just enjoy the game.
Hopefully, these tips will help you make this season your best yet. Here’s to better golf in 2025!
There’s no better time than now
