Steve Sarkisian has become one heck of a football coach for the Texas Longhorns. As with anything, though, it took him time to get to this position, with his team just two victories away from winning the national championship.
He was previously the head coach at Washington from 2009-13 and he was “promoted” from that position to replace Lane Kiffin after his run with USC ended on a tarmac.
Sarkisian’s tenure at USC ended terribly as he was fired after struggling with a rather public alcohol problem.
That could have been the end for Coach Sark, but he’s gotten sober, turned his life around and he worked his way back up through assistant jobs with the Alabama Crimson Tide and Atlanta Falcons before finally getting a shot at redemption at Texas.
Sarkisian took that shot and it’s more than worked out for both parties, but with success comes attention. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is now reporting that there’s a possibility several NFL teams may be interested in poaching Sarkisian from Texas when the Longhorns’ run is done.
“Well I think there are a couple of teams that have some interest in speaking with Sark after the season ends,” Schefter said on ESPN’s “Get Up” (h/t On3). “So, if Texas were to lose this week, then that would free him him up to go do that if that’s what he wanted. And, if they win and go on and somehow find a way to win the national championship, I would think there might be even more teams that would be interested in talking.”
Sarkisian was the quarterback’s coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and he had that stint as offensive coordinator for the Falcons from 2017-18. That experience would come in handy as an NFL head coach, but one would imagine any interested NFL parties would really have to come to the table with an incredible package.
Sark has something really good going on at Texas, so it presumably would be really tough to draw him away from the Longhorns.
