Before Friday’s Cotton Bowl matchup against Ohio State, University of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers suggested that he will be entering the 2025 NFL Draft whenever Texas’ College Football Playoff run comes to an end.
When asked by ESPN’s Pete Thamel if he expects to be playing in the NFL next season, Ewers simply responded with “Yes” and added that he did not expect to be playing college football next season. He did, however, add a “We’ll see” to leave some level of doubt with his answer, but the “Yes” to the NFL question is about as definitive of an answer as you can get.
The question now becomes a two-parter of: 1) How high will he go in the draft? and 2) What sort of upside does he have?
Coming into the 2024 season there was an expectation that Ewers could potentially be a very high first-round pick in 2025. But his 2024 season has been impacted by injuries and inconsistent play, hurting his potential draft stock.
There is still a chance that he could be a mid-round pick, especially if he performs well in the pre-draft process and all of his pre-draft workouts, but it probably will not be enough to get him back into the first round. Even in a quarterback class that is widely considered to be a down year.
There had been rumors that Ewers could stay in college and transfer elsewhere with a significant NIL deal, but that does not seem to be on the horizon for him.
Ewers has been a three-year starter at Texas. Entering play on Friday he had 66 career touchdown passes to 23 interceptions. That includes 29 touchdown passes this season to lead the country despite missing a handful of games.
Whether it is for another college program or the NFL, Ewers’ time as Texas’ starting quarterback seems to be over after this season, paving the way for Arch Manning to take over the program next season.
