Carson Beck wasted very little time committing to Miami after he entered the transfer portal last week, but at least one of Georgia’s big SEC rivals reportedly made a run at the star quarterback.
Beck stunned the college football world last Thursday when he changed his mind about the NFL Draft and decided to transfer from Georgia. He then signed with Miami less than 48 hours later, which likely means he had planned to join the Hurricanes all along.
There was some speculation that Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was ready to move on from Beck, but Matt Hayes of USA Today Sports reported on Wednesday that Smart wanted to bring Beck back in 2025. Smart was reportedly the first coach to reach out to Beck after the quarterback entered the portal. Beck could not be convinced to return to Athens.
Miami was not the second team to contact Beck. A person close to Beck told Hayes that Alabama reached out to the senior after Georgia.
It is noteworthy that Alabama expressed interest in Beck. Jalen Milroe has decided to declare for the NFL Draft, but former 5-star prospect Ty Simpson is entering his fourth year with the Crimson Tide and is expected to step into a starting role. Assuming Alabama did reach out to Beck, that could signal that Kalen DeBoer is less than 100 percent set on Simpson as his starter.
Miami and two other teams were viewed as the early favorites to land Beck, but the quarterback had likely already made up his mind. It seems like his girlfriend may have had a lot to do with that.
