1. John Stockton – 3,265
By matching his elite play on both sides of the court with equally remarkable durability, Stockton’s name appears all over the NBA record books. With over 500 more steals than any other player in history, this record is viewed as one of the most challenging to break in sports.
2. Jason Kidd – 2,684
One of the best floor generals in NBA history, Kidd also posed a game-changing threat on the defensive end. Renowned for his court awareness and ability to read passing lanes, Kidd not only ranks second on the all-time assists leaderboard, but he also excelled at anticipating opponents’ moves, racking up steals throughout his 19-year career.
3. Chris Paul – 2,669*
Paul’s place on this list is a testament to his relentless ball pressure and ability to dictate the game on both ends of the court. With each of his teams, Paul has provided an immense lift with his abilities on the floor, as well as his leadership off the court.
4. Michael Jordan – 2,514
Viewed by some as the greatest of all time, the all-time steals leaderboard is yet another career list with Jordan’s name on it. Jordan played fewer games than anyone else on this list, yet his 2.35 steals per game were enough to amass the fourth-highest total in league history.
5. Gary Payton – 2,445
Payton’s relentless, physical defense led him to nine NBA All-Defensive First Team selections, all while matching up with some of the best players in league history. “The Glove” was able to guard many positions, frequently forcing turnovers and bad shots, leading many to view him as the best defensive guard the league has seen.
6. Maurice Cheeks – 2,310
Cheeks averaged over 2.0 steals per game in 10 of his 11 seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, establishing himself as a franchise legend with his consistency on both ends of the floor. Like many on this list, his quickness and anticipation led to many forced turnovers and created fast break opportunities.
7. Scottie Pippen – 2,307
As the forward with the most steals in league history, Pippen was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team eight times. He impacted all aspects of the game, racking up steals and dominating on the defensive end while also thriving in the 1990’s Bulls offense.
8. LeBron James – 2,301*
Much like Michael Jordan, James’ name appears on numerous career statistical leaderboards. His ranking on this list might be unexpected, as he is better known for his scoring, playmaking, and leadership, yet his position as the eighth all-time leader in steals further underscores his all-around greatness.
9. Clyde Drexler – 2,207
In addition to his highlight real dunks, Drexler put his incredible athletic ability to great use on the defensive end. Despite frequently guarding some of the game’s best players, Drexler was frequently able to shut down his matchup.
10. Hakeen Olajuwon – 2,162
As the only big man on this list, Olajuwon is best known for his post defense and shot blocking, with the most career blocks in NBA history. His presence on this list demonstrates his exceptional defensive instincts and remarkable agility for a 7-footer, supporting his case as one of the greatest overall defensive players in history.
