Rumors and reports have been flying ever since it was recently revealed that Colorado head coach Deion Sanders could potentially leave to become the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
One of the latest updates was shared on Thursday by NFL Network’s Jane Slater, who revealed that, according to her sources, Sanders was met with resistance earlier this week when he reportedly had a discussion with Colorado athletic director Rick George about “additional money for NIL and his staff.”
If Slater’s report is true, then it’s possible that Sanders has already coached his final game with the Buffaloes.
Even if he doesn’t end up becoming the next Cowboys head coach, it seems like there could be a rift developing between Colorado and Sanders.
It would be a bit shocking if the Buffaloes are feeling hesitant about giving Sanders more funding for NIL deals and his staff considering how much money the school has generated since he was hired two years ago.
In the 15 seasons before hiring Sanders, Colorado won five or fewer games 14 times. This past season, the Buffaloes ranked as high as No. 16 in the AP poll and finished with a 9-4 record, including a 7-2 record in the Big 12 Conference.
Colorado’s incoming recruiting class is also ranked second in the Big 12 by On3.com and 34th overall.
Everything that Sanders has been able to do in a short period of time is likely more than the Buffaloes could have ever hoped for. Yet, Slater’s report indicates that Colorado still might not be interested in investing the type of money into its football program that would help it compete with some of the elite schools in the nation.
Sanders has never been the type of person to just be fine with people telling him no. So, if the Buffaloes won’t provide him with the resources he believes his team needs to succeed, then he’ll probably just leave and find a school, or professional team, that will give him what he desires.
If that happens, then Colorado will look incredibly foolish for not making the most out of a head coach who has given life to one of the most mediocre college football programs of the century.
There are reasons why the Buffaloes struggled for so long, and those reasons appear to be coming into the light as more and more reports are shared about Sanders and his potential departure to the NFL.
