Justin Kluivert netted his second hat-trick of the season to inspire Bournemouth to a stunning 4-1 away victory over Newcastle. We bring you the best facts and Opta data with our Newcastle vs Bournemouth stats page.
His father may have spent an entire season at Newcastle, but Justin Kluivert needed just 45 minutes to surpass Patrick Kluivert’s Premier League goal tally at St James’ Park.
The Dutchman scored twice in the first half to give Bournemouth a 2-1 lead at the break and completed his treble late in the second. Milos Kerkez added a fourth as Andoni Iraola’s men extended their unbeaten Premier League run to 10 matches.
It’s rare to see Newcastle so comprehensively outplayed at home, but Bournemouth were outstanding from start to finish. Their emphatic victory here put an end to Newcastle’s nine-game winning streak in all competitions.
The Cherries made a flying start, taking the lead after just six minutes. Antoine Semenyo broke in behind Tino Livramento and cut the ball back for Kluivert to sweep home. It was the earliest Newcastle had conceded at St James’ Park in the Premier League since last April, when Sheffield United’s Anel Ahmedhodžić scored in the fifth minute.
Newcastle equalised 20 minutes later. Bruno Guimarães nodded in from a whipped Lewis Hall corner to restore parity during an electric opening spell.
However, Bournemouth regained the lead just before half-time. Their relentless high press forced Guimarães into an error, with Dango Ouattara pouncing to play in Kluivert, who calmly slotted home his second.
Bournemouth thought they had scored a third on the hour mark when Ouattara lunged at the back post to convert David Brooks’ chipped cross. However, VAR intervened, ruling the goal out after replays showed the ball had gone out of play earlier in the move.
Kluivert completed his hat-trick in style, curling a stunning effort from outside the box to become the first player in Bournemouth’s Premier League history to score two hat-tricks in a single season. Flying full-back Kerkez then put the result beyond doubt with a late fourth.
Bournemouth were aggressive and diligent throughout, pressing Newcastle into mistakes throughout the contest. It was a rare off day for Eddie Howe’s men, who could not secure a club-record 10th consecutive win in all competitions.
