The Dallas Cowboys are in a state of flux right now as they decided not to bring back head coach Mike McCarthy following their disappointing 2024 NFL season.
Dallas finished the year with a 7-10 record and missed the postseason, coming up well short of their preseason expectations.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said midseason that he was committed to McCarthy for the remainder of the season and even seemed willing to bring him back despite the team’s struggles.
Now that McCarthy is out of the picture, Jones will need to conduct a head coaching search and, hopefully, find a candidate who can lead the team back to relevance.
There are a number of strong candidates in this year’s hiring cycle, though Gerald McCoy believes Jones should go outside the box and trade for Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin via NFL Network.
“He needs to use all the Infinity Stones and trade for Mike Tomlin,” McCoy said. “You say you need somebody to look Jerry in the face and say, ‘We do not care.’ He will look him in the face and say, ‘Jerry, back up. Let me do this.’”

As McCoy mentioned, working in Dallas can be difficult, given Jones’ involvement in the day-to-day and his desire to run things.
Bringing in someone like Tomlin would signal a significant shift in the balance of power as he would demand more influence regarding the roster.
Perhaps Tomlin needs a change of scenery, though it remains to be seen whether Pittsburgh would even consider trading him.
