Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka were the two dominant midfielders at both club and country for multiple years, as the departure of Thiago Alcántara saw the German duo establish a stranglehold on Bayern Munich’s midfield. That was, however, until this season as Goretzka had to make due with a rather small role in the squad, waiting for injuries to strike and get his chance again. He is now back and with a bang, as well, scoring two goals against VFL Wolfsburg to underline a great performance. His midfield partner was only too happy to speak of Goretzka’s glorious return.
“I’m very happy for him. Leon is a prime example for everyone in the dressing room that doesn’t play a lot,” Kimmich said, via @iMiaSanMia. “Football is always fast-paced and above all it’s about performances. If you consistently perform well, you’ll be on the pitch. He took his chance and rewarded himself.”
He will need to keep performing, as well, to retain his spot in the starting XI. Considering Aleksandar Pavlović started over him in the previous midweek fixture, will Goretzka retain his spot in the starting XI in the Champions League game against Feyenoord? That is certainly something to keep an eye on.
