While the New York Jets could be closing in on hiring a new head coach and general manager, they still have to figure out what will happen at quarterback.
After two very disappointing and frustrating seasons, Aaron Rodgers doesn’t seem sure he wants to stay with them, or even continue to play in the NFL.
One Jets insider said the decision on whether to keep Rodgers could ultimately fall to owner Woody Johnson.
“It’s beyond coach and it’s beyond GM. It’s does ownership want to deal with it?” Connor Hughes of SNY said, via WFAN Sports Radio.

Statistically, Rodgers may not have been terrible this season — he threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns — but watching him play, it’s clear that he’s over the hill and not likely to go through a renaissance.
In addition, as Hughes mentioned, there is all the baggage off the field that comes with Rodgers, including but not limited to his media appearances and ways of trying to dictate affairs.
New York has talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball, but if Rodgers continues to decline, which seems very likely, his inability to raise his game on demand could hold back the entire team.
While many have pointed the finger at Rodgers for New York’s 5-12 record in 2024, others feel Johnson is more to blame for making multiple poor decisions.
Therefore, it may be on the owner to start making a series of good moves to help the Jets reach the playoffs for the first time since the 2010 season.
