Arsenal eventually secured what felt like a significant 1-0 win at Wolves, despite receiving their fourth red card of the season in the Premier League.
Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off late in the first half, though João Gomes was also dismissed midway through the second half, which handed momentum to the visitors.
Riccardo Calafiori came off the bench to score the winner, keeping Arsenal six points behind league leaders Liverpool.
A fairly uneventful first half had it’s first moment of note in the 43rd minute when Lewis-Skelly was given his marching orders by referee Michael Oliver. After Wolves cleared an Arsenal corner, Lewis-Skelly cynically brought down Matt Doherty as he looked to break. Oliver judged the contact with Doherty’s ankle to be reckless enough to produce the red card, despite strong Arsenal protestations.
At 18 years and 121 days, Lewis-Skelly became the third-youngest player to receive a red card in the Premier League, older only than Wayne Rooney vs Birmingham in 2002 (17y 63d) and Michael Owen vs Man Utd in 1998 (18y 117d).
Arsenal were coping well with having a man fewer, and Wolves threw away that advantage in the 70th minute when Gomes received a second yellow card for catching Jurriën Timber on the foot with a challenge to level things at 10 players each.
That was enough for Arsenal to take the initiative as Gabriel Martinelli’s cross was headed away poorly by Nélson Semedo straight to substitute Calafiori, who fired into the far corner with a superb first-time finish in the 74th minute.
Wolves had half chances through Matheus Cunha but the Brazilian was unable to harm the Gunners, who saw out the win relatively comfortably in the end.
