“Not our nicest performance but a nice win,” Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany said after a 2-1 win over SC Freiburg on Saturday, and that about sums it up.
Bayern flashed the spectacular — both Harry Kane’s turn and strike for the first goal and Kim Min-jae’s deft near-post header from a near-Olympico corner from Joshua Kimmich are worth watching in the highlights — but could not break the game wide open.
Instead, after Freiburg scored in return on a corner in the second half, the Bavarians were left hanging on to victory. The home side got their share of chances, and the visitors needed their share of desperate defending. Both Kane and Müller earned yellow cards for their troubles — in necessary interventions to prevent Freiburg breakaways.
In the end, Bayern got the three points. Now it’s back to the Champions League, where an important final league phase match awaits.
