Bayern Munich narrowly missed out on a top 8 finish in the Champions League, despite beating Slovan Bratislava 3-1 at home. The losses the Bavarians suffered throughout their European campaign proved to be costly as scoring goals continue to be an issue for the team, prompting Manuel Neuer to say that they do not deserve to be in the top 8 with this kind of form. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany echoed this sentiment.
“We had to win 6 games out of 8. We only won 5. In the end fair is fair”, Kompany said after the match (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “I think we tried, but the format is also designed to create this type of situation. We’re not the only team having to play these two extra games.”
The draw for the Round of 32 or playoffs of the knockout stage will confirm one of Celtic of Manchester City to be the next team that the Rekordmeister plays, with Real Madrid drawing the other team that Bayern won’t face. If Bayern do get past the playoffs, Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen awaits them.
