With his penalty against Bournemouth, Mohamed Salah hit yet another milestone. Only three Premier League legends are now ahead of the Liverpool forward for 20-goal seasons.
Mohamed Salah has hit 20 Premier League goals in a season for a fifth time.
With his first-half penalty against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, the Liverpool forward extended his lead at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts for 2024-25 and made it to 20 for the season. It was also his 177th Premier League goal, taking him level with Frank Lampard in the all-time record books.
Salah has been in sensational form this term, registering goal involvements at a record rate, leading the Premier League for assists (13) as well as goals. Only two players have ever been the outright leader for both goals and assists in a Premier League season – Andy Cole in 1993-94 and Harry Kane in 2020-21 – although Salah came close in 2021-22 when he topped the assists charts but shared the lead for goals with Son Heung-min.
This season is now the fifth separate campaign in which the Egyptian has reached 20 Premier League goals. Only Alan Shearer (7), Sergio Agüero (6) and Kane (6) have done so more times than him. Salah is now level on five with Thierry Henry.
Although Salah’s contract situation at Liverpool is still up in the air and there is a chance he leaves Anfield at the end of the campaign, for now, he is the only active player at the top of this list and if he does stay beyond this season, there is every chance he moves up the rankings. He will turn 33 this June but his form this term suggests he’s a long way from anything like a decline.
This season he has needed just 23 games to score 20 goals – fewer games than he has ever taken to reach the landmark. Even in his record-breaking debut 2017-18 season, when he went on to score 32 goals – then a record by a player in a 38-game Premier League season – it wasn’t until his 25th appearance of the season that he scored his 20th goal.
Availability has been key this term. Salah has started all 23 of Liverpool’s Premier League games so far, and if he continues to do so, there’s no reason he can’t top his own best of 32 goals in a season. In that 32-goal campaign, he started 34 of Liverpool’s matches.
Back on the subject of 2024-25 now being Salah’s fifth 20-goal season in the Premier League, he has come very close to 20 goals in three other campaigns, and so could very easily be above Shearer at the top of the list.
In both 2019-20 and 2022-23, the Egyptian scored 19 goals, while in 2023-24, he scored 18. In one of his two 19-goal campaigns, he failed to score in his last four appearances of the season, and in the other, he failed to score in his last three.
Things could therefore be very different. As it is, Salah will have to settle for joint third in this specific list. For now, at least.
