It’s tough anytime your school loses a talented recruit, but in the case of four-star defensive lineman JaReylan McCoy, the LSU Tigers are still apparently in the running.
McCoy committed to Brian Kelly and the Tigers on Jan. 2, so his commitment lasted just over a month. That’s the world we live in when it comes to today’s recruiting trail — and that’s not to mention things like NIL and the transfer portal — but one gets the sense that McCoy just jumped into the pool a bit early.
He was apparently still open to taking visits and keeping other programs as options even when he committed to LSU, so his decommitment even just a few weeks later isn’t a terrible surprise.
“I just need to think about things a little more,” McCoy told Chad Simmons of On3 regarding his decision. “LSU is a great school and I love coach [Kevin] Peoples, so LSU is still in the mix, but I just wanted to open things back up.”
Tennessee and USC were amongst his finalists last month, so it will be interesting to see if the Volunteers and Trojans hop back in the mix. Other notable programs that have offered McCoy include Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss and Tennesee, amongst others.
From Tupelo, Mississippi, McCoy is the No. 6 defensive lineman in the 2026 class, according to the 247Sports Composite.
