One of the biggest boxing matches that can be made is on the cusp of being finalized, as Canelo Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) and Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) are expected to meet on Sept. 13 from inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is according to ESPN, which has multiple sources telling them the long-awaited title fight is close to being signed.
Sounds like Saudi Arabian’s Turki Alalshikh has changed his mind again about the pound-for-pound money fight.
Alvarez, 34, remains one of the biggest stars in boxing today. The Mexican champion is coming off a unanimous decision win over Edgar Berlanga back in Sept. 2024 to defend his super middleweight titles for his eighth-straight time. The only hiccup for Alvarez over the past decade is a decision loss to former light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, but Canelo was moving up in that fight. This time around, Canelo will be the bigger fighter when he meets Crawford this summer.
Crawford, 37, is widely regarded as a top three pound-for-pound fighter in boxing today. The undefeated veteran is the first male boxer in history to become a two-weight undisputed champion in the “four-belt era,” accomplishing this feat at light welterweight and welterweight. “Bud” moved up to light middleweight back in Aug. 2024 to claim a unanimous decision win over Israil Madrimov to win the WBA and vacant WBO interim light middleweight titles, but it was more competitive than what fight fans would have liked to see.
According to the ESPN report, Crawford has agreed to jump up two weight classes in order to fight Canelo this September. There won’t be any catchweight stipulated or a rehydration clause.
