Now that the San Francisco 49ers have hired Brant Boyer to be their special teams coordinator and brought back Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator, they can get down to the business of shaping their roster for the 2025 NFL season.
The first thing they might do is get quarterback Brock Purdy signed to a contract extension that will not cripple them and prevent them from making other moves that will be needed to return to Super Bowl contention.
Many people are saying that Purdy doesn’t deserve a top-of-the-market contract after his numbers went down in 2024, but legendary Niners quarterback Joe Montana said Purdy’s value remains high.
“Everybody has up and down years,” Montana said, via Zach Gelb. “I can show you a handful of quarterbacks that are making a crapload of money that haven’t done anywhere near, produced anywhere near, what Purdy has done. So I say you pay him and get it behind you as fast as you can.”

Purdy, who was the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, stepped into San Francisco’s QB1 spot in Week 13 as a rookie and took the league by storm.
He helped San Francisco reach the NFC Championship Game, but he tore the UCL of his throwing arm, and a year later, he took the 49ers to the Super Bowl and the brink of a championship.
Purdy had a sensational 2023 season, but in 2024, his passing yards and touchdown percentage decreased.
It is an open debate how much of the drop in those two categories was due to an expected statistical regression and how much of it was caused by the multiple injuries the Niners had to deal with, starting in training camp.
There still seems to be a belief that if the Niners keep their core intact and are relatively healthy next season, Purdy will play well again and they will have another real shot at their sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy.
