UFC featherweight and UFC 312 fighter Jack Jenkins is in the hospital due to fractured cartilage in his throat.
Jenkins lost to Gabriel Santos on the prelims of the Sydney card, losing the fight due to a rear-naked choke in the third round. That submission earned Santos a $50,000 performance bonus, and Jenkins two trips to the hospital.
According to the Instagram account Australian MMA, Jenkins was originally sent home from the hospital following some post-fight medical tests but then readmitted after someone took a closer look at his scan and found fractured cartilage in his thyroid.
“The injury occurred towards the end of the first round when Jenkins suffered a fracture to his thyroid cartilage leading to an air leak into his chest and neck,” the report from Australian MMA read. “Following the round, he reported numbness and a loss of strength in his left arm.”
Jenkins would go on to fight another round and a half, getting caught in a rear-naked choke two minutes into the third round.
While the injury is considered serious, Jenkins’ team is hoping he’ll be released within the next 24 hours.
The loss drops Jenkins to 3-2 in the UFC and 13-4 overall.
