College football head coaches often get most of the credit, or criticism, for their teams’ recruiting efforts. While that is for good reason as they spearhead and are responsible for the operations of their recruiting departments, much of the duties also fall on personnel staffers and assistant coaches. In fact, each of the top 10 recruiters for the 2025 cycle are assistant coaches, with most hailing from the sport’s most prolific programs, such as Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia.
Elite recruiting is not only essential in building a program into a national title contender, but it can also help assistant coaches earn larger roles. Look no further than the 2024 cycle, wherein the 247Sports National Recruiter of the Year — former Georgia defensive backs coach Fran Brown — parlayed his dominance on the trail into the first head coaching job of his career at Syracuse.
The 2025 cycle heated up this summer during a hectic period that saw countless blue-chip prospects come off the board, and with that busy period, the pecking order among the nation’s top recruiters began to fall much more firmly into place.
