This year’s NFL draft class isn’t nearly as deep as last year’s class, especially at the quarterback position, but there are two signal-callers who are very intriguing.
Cam Ward from the University of Florida and Shedeur Sanders from the University of Colorado are universally considered the two best QB prospects this year and perhaps the only ones this year who have any chance of becoming franchise players at the next level.
There is a lot of speculation about what the quarterback-hungry New York Giants will do with their No. 3 overall draft pick, and ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller feels Ward would be a good choice for New York and head coach Brian Daboll.
“Cam Ward is such a good fit for what Brian Daboll has done traditionally on offense.”

Miller referenced Daboll’s days as the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator, back when Josh Allen was a young signal-caller looking to establish himself as a star after he struggled in his first two pro seasons.
The Giants had to find a way to win with Daniel Jones at quarterback going back to 2019, and it finally became evident to them that he simply wasn’t going to evolve into a franchise player.
They benched and eventually released him this season, putting them in a situation where they need someone who is very capable under center.
New York has a poor offensive line, and other than rookie stud Malik Nabers, a lack of viable playmakers, which led team legend Tiki Barber to urge them not to get fixated on drafting a QB.
On the other hand, if they come away from the upcoming scouting combine convinced that Ward, or for that matter Sanders, is a franchise-caliber player, they likely need to draft him without needing to play him right away, as they can’t be sure they will be able to draft a similar player next year.
