Sometimes, the result is far more important than the performance, and this was one of those nights for Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta’s side weren’t at their best in beating a resolute and determined Manchester United and required two set-piece goals to earn a win, but on a night when Premier League leaders and favourites Liverpool slipped up at Newcastle, Arsenal won’t mind at all.
In the absence of their biggest set-piece threat in Gabriel Magalhães, other defenders stepped up from corners to fire in the goals that separated the sides at full-time, with Jurriën Timber and William Saliba scoring the goals.
Arsenal were made to work extremely hard for the win, as Ruben Amorim’s United side were content to sit back and make themselves as difficult as possible to break down. The hosts were, however, more than happy to rely on set-pieces, which have become a speciality of Arteta’s team, for the goals they needed.
It wasn’t a vintage display, but with Liverpool drawing earlier in the evening, the three points were all that mattered.
Game on in the title race.
