West Ham produced a performance that will encourage new manager Graham Potter as they were ultimately unfortunate to only draw 1-1 with Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday.
Unai Emery’s Villa are on the second-longest unbeaten run at home in the Premier League (11 matches), highlighting the task that had been before for West Ham.
But the away team left Birmingham having arguably been the better team on the day, giving Potter his first away point as West Ham boss.
Villa had begun the game well enough.
Amid an energetic start, the hosts went ahead in just the eighth minute as Jacob Ramsey exchanged a give-and-go with Ollie Watkins before bursting into the box and applying the finish.
That took Watkins to 100 goal involvements for Villa in the Premier League, making him only the second player to reach that figure for the club after Gabriel Agbonlahor (108).
It also made him the quickest player to reach 100 Premier League goal involvements since Kevin De Bruyne in 2020, with the Belgian needing 155 games and Watkins requiring 169.
Watkins might have taken his tally to 101 but Morgan Rogers had a goal disallowed after his teammate strayed just offside.
But the withdrawal of the injured Tyrone Mings in the 38th minute seemed to upset Villa’s momentum considerably, with West Ham improving markedly after that.
West Ham, who saw a Carlos Soler attempt cleared off the line on the hour, were ultimately good value for their equaliser with 20 minutes to go – Emerson Palmieri heading in from Edson Álvarez’s right-wing cross.
Most of the late pressure came from the Hammers, spurred on by the excellent Lucas Paquetá.
The Brazilian briefly thought he’d scored a dramatic late winner, only for the assistant’s flag to cut short their celebrations as Tomás Soucek had been offside.
And that proved to be the final incident of note, as Villa held on gratefully for a point, while West Ham moved above Manchester United in the table for at least a couple of hours.
