We can Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany to the list of people impressed by the way that Mainz 05 has played this season.
“Mainz have done very well since the cup game against us, have conceded very few goals, apart from the last game. They’re confident, but so are we,” said Kompany, whose team took down Mainz 05 4-0 in October in the DFB-Pokal (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We’ve got a lot of respect for the opponent and know there are no easy games. The talk before the cup game there was how dangerous games there can be. We need to perform, but always have trust in the squad.”
One prevalent theme this weeks (and also for the last few weeks) has been the mounting list of injuries that Bayern Munich has had to deal with. Kompany will not feel sorry for himself, though he is looking forward to getting his team back and fully healthy once again.
“I’m very knowledgeable on the subject of injuries. Looking at the injury history of a squad is important. The role we have is to minimise that. We’ve managed that well so far. But I’m not surprised that there’s a moment where there are several injuries. We need every player, the whole squad. The medical department is working at the highest level. We always need to consider a player’s injury history. But we also had a few ‘freak’ injuries,” said Kompany. “Harry Kane is still unavailable. The other injured players too. But the players that were there against Shakhtar are available for tomorrow. It’s normal after a game that one or two players do their training inside. (Upamecano) will be with the team today.
“(Kane’s) recovery went very well. It was a close call for tomorrow, but it’s looking good for Leipzig. There was no setback. We’ve now for Mainz and Leipzig. The squad won’t change much there. Harry we’ve mentioned. Things also look good for Alphonso Davies. If things go well in final training, then the squad for Mainz will be the same as against Shakhtar. Almost all injured players will be back against Gladbach (after the winter break).”
