In this weekend’s Bundesliga match against relegation zone Holstein Kiel, Bayern Munich raced out to a 2-0 halftime lead and added two quick goals in the second half to take a commanding 4-0 lead. In the 58th minute, veterans Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller, and João Palhinha subbed on to see how the rest of the game. What could go wrong?
In the 62nd minute, Finn Porath put Kiel on the scoreboard with a nice shot. It would have been nice to hold the clean sheet, but Kiel has only been shut out five times this season. Kiel’s biggest problem is their defense which has only produced one clean sheet all season.
But then super sub Steven Skrzybski scored twice in stoppage time to force Bayern to hold on for dear life until the final whistle. Bayern fans collectively let out a sigh of relief, but Bayern captain Manuel Neuer voiced his frustration in his postgame interview.
“We played well for long stretches, but we ruined the game a little bit in the end,” said Neuer (captured via @iMiaSanMia). “That’s annoying. We made too many wrong decisions. It’s important for us to stick to our plan until the end. But overall, we got three points and that’s the most important thing.”
Neuer only made two saves in the game but did not have much of a chance at any of the three goals. Defensive breakdowns and poor communication resulted in a tight win against a bottom feeder that should have been a celebration. Bayern is sitting comfortably atop the Bundesliga standings but need to close out games better if they want to hold off Bayer Leverkusen’s late charge in the Rückrunde.
