According to Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich is crunching the numbers to see under what scenarios it can achieve a “top eight finish” in the Champions League:
Although very complicated, Bayern did not give up on finishing in the top 8 in order to avoid the playoffs. Internally, calculations are being made – and Bayern are determined not only to beat Bratislava, but to do so with a big scoreline in order to have the best position as far as the goal difference is concerned.
There’s even talk about an 8-0 win to overtake Atalanta on goal difference even if the Italian side gets a draw in Barcelona. Realistically, Bayern need a miracle – but they want to do their homework against Bratislava and hope the other results will play into their hands.
Bayern Munich released the breakdown on its website (click here for the full breakdown), but this was the summary:
FC Bayern would have to overtake seven of the ten teams listed in the table on the final matchday in order to qualify directly for the last 16 of the Champions League. A scenario that is improbable, but definitely not impossible. “The good thing is that we haven’t been knocked out,” said CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen after the 3-0 defeat at Feyenoord on the last matchday. “Reaching the top eight will be difficult or even impossible – it would be a miracle,” Dreesen continued. But as Katja Ebstein sang so beautifully: “Wunder gibt es immer wieder!” (Miracles happen all the time!)
Bayern Munich seems to be willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the best chance to finish in the top eight, but it faces an uphill battle. The problem for Bayern Munich against Slovan Bratislava is that there are a multitude of questions surrounding the availability of center-backs and goalkeepers for this match.
Hopefully, Bayern Munich can muster enough manpower up to give itself the best chance to succeed.
Is Bayern Munich setting the bar too low for itself with some of the decisions that it is making? Where does Bayern need to to improve the roster now…and in the future? Should the club just stay quiet about Joshua Kimmich’s contract situation? We think so! Let’s talk about all of that and more on the Bavarian Podcast Works Show.
