Bayern Munich escaped with a point tonight, and from the way they played, it was evident that would be the result.
It was a performance that lacked Bayern’s usual dominance, but Jamal Musiala’s post-match words (via @iMiaSanMia) summed up the night: “We didn’t play our game today. We didn’t put pressure and didn’t have much of the ball. But in the end, we got a point and kept the 8-point lead, so that’s a small positive from today. We’ll look at what we can do better in the coming weeks, starting with Celtic on Tuesday.”
Leverkusen controlled possession, dictated tempo, and somehow got Bayern to have an xG of less than zero. The midfield struggled to impose itself, and the attack felt disconnected, a persisting issue as of late.
Yet, despite all that, Bayern still walked away with a draw and maintained their comfortable Bundesliga cushion. A bad day? Yes. A disaster? Hardly. But with a crucial Champions League clash against Celtic looming, Musiala is right—improvements are needed. If Bayern want to compete on all fronts, they can’t afford another showing like this.
