A brilliant, buccaneering Bayern Munich performance led to a 5-1 win in the Bundesliga over a hapless RB Leipzig side, but it was always overshadowed by the tragedy that happened shortly before the game in Magdeburg. Bayern legend Thomas Müller revealed that the team did not know about it until after the final whistle.
“We found out after the game. It’s often difficult to put into perspective. We’re concentrating on football, are completely in the zone and then every so often you’re confronted with reality. We desperately wanted to win, and do so in a certain manner. But you can never plan for such a clear result,” Müller said (as captured by FCBayern.com). “You can only plan things and put them into practice, which will then lead you on your way: duels, speed of passing and so on.
“The set-up was more comfortable today than [in the 2-1 loss to] Mainz last week, because Leipzig are also a team that want to play football, even though they’re not in their best phase at the moment. We capitalized on that well, didn’t let ourselves get rattled after the equalizer and kept going to the end.”
In the end, it was a successful day for FC Bayern on the field — but regrettably a tragic one too, outside the world of sport.
