In the 38th minute of Bayern Munich’s 4-2 victory over FC Heidenheim on Saturday, Thomas Müller found himself with back to goal but in a good position to try the audacious.
He and Raphaël Guerreiro had both made a charge into the Heidenheim box, and Guerreiro popped the ball back towards him in a slick give-and-go move. The score was 1-0, with the Bavarians pushing hard to double their advantage.
So naturally, Müller sized up the situation and went for the overhead golazo.
Ouch. If you watched the landing, it looked painful — and Müller confirmed as much.
“My attempt at a bicycle kick didn’t go so well,” Müller quipped afterwards in remarks captured by FCBayern.com. “My muscles were a bit tight, and I couldn’t move after the break, but it wasn’t that bad. I don’t think it was the stupidest idea to make way for Jamal.”
After Heidenheim equalized in the 51st minute, Müller was off for Jamal Musiala on what was supposed to be the younger superstar’s rest day. But all went well for the Bavarians, who via a Musiala brace collected the 4-2 win in the end.
Müller went on to highlight that there was room for criticism — if one insisted on making it — and for Bayern to be more clinical with their opportunities.
But: “In the end, the important thing is that we won today.”
