Sky Sport journalist Patrick Berger had a blockbuster of a story, which detailed Borussia Dortmund’s secret meeting in Austria with Ralf Rangnick.
Rangnick, of course, is the Austrian national team head coach and was one of the names linked to Bayern Munich last summer before the club ultimately hired Vincent Kompany:
⚫️ EXKLUSIV! ✈️

⚫️ EXCLUSIVE! The #BVB met with Ralf Rangnick (66/ ) to convince him of a rescue job until summer! The meeting took place on Monday in Salzburg – Watzke and Ricken, among others, flew to Austria especially. ✈️
However, the current Austria coach is still under contract with the ÖFB until December 2025. Rangnick had already been a coaching candidate at BVB in the past and already took over a club on an interim basis in the winter – Manchester United in the 2021/22 season. #MUFC
According to Sky information, Rangnick is leaning more towards turning down the offer in the current situation. However, Sommer now considers him to be one of the closest candidates.
Dortmund are still having a hard time finding a coach. Niko Kovac (53/ ) is still a serious candidate. According to Sky information, Dortmund met with him on Friday. However, Kovac has clear demands and does not want to come in as a fireman for half a year. @Plettigoal @philipphinze24 @SkySportDE
Aside of Rangnick, BVB also has VfB Stuttgart headman Sebastian Hoeneß high on its list, per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg:
Sebastian #Hoeneß is one of Borussia Dortmund’s absolute top candidates for the coming summer, should #BVB plan to present a long-term solution only from then on.
⚠️ His release clause, in the range of €7-8 million, will also be valid for Dortmund in the summer, especially… pic.twitter.com/eB2J4fVcQV

⚠️ His release clause, in the range of €7-8 million, will also be valid for Dortmund in the summer, especially if BVB fails to qualify for the Champions League.
Hoeneß aims to decide on his future between March and April if possible. However, his first point of contact remains VfB Stuttgart. @berger_pj | @SkySportDE
With Borussia Dortmund unable to settle in on a final candidate, the club might truly have to stick with Mike Tullberg for the rest of the season, unless it ups the ante for any of its preferred candidates.
