Borussia Dortmund manager Nuri Şahin was extremely proud of his squad after a tense 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker.
“We wanted to win this game. That’s what we expect of ourselves, but you have to be realistic. In the final minutes, I had the feeling we just had to finish this game off defensively. I saw a very good Dortmund team today and I’m proud of the lads. We did a good job. Bayern has lots of quality. They changed the system at half-time and were able to push us back deep a few times. However, we had some good counter-attacking opportunities too. If we had scored the 2:0, we would have left the pitch winners. In the end, you can say it was a deserved 1:1,” said Sahin.
For center-back Nico Schlotterbeck the result was fair.
”The bottom line is, it was a fair draw. Bayern pressured us well in the second half. When you’re in the lead for so long, you obviously want to win. The team invested everything today. I was extremely nervous going into the game. I captained Borussia Dortmund at the age of 24. That is an incredible feeling.”
One player whose impact was undeniable for BVB was Jamie Gittens, who took a pass from Schlotterbeck, raced from midfield to the net, before unleashing a laser over a prone Manuel Neuer.
”It’s great to play here. It gives you energy. It was an intense and fast-paced game. When I scored the goal, I noticed I had space, so I just ran forward and scored,” said Gittens.
