After lamenting his status on Bayern Munich’s second team last week, Nestory Irankunda got the loan move he wanted.
The Australian winger has shipped off to Grasshopper Club Zurich through the end of this season (as announced by FCBayern.com):
FC Bayern’s Nestory Irankunda (18) is to go out on loan to Swiss first division club GC Zurich until 30 June 2025. The Australian winger joined the German record champions from Adelaide United last summer.
Irankunda made 15 appearances for FC Bayern’s reserves in the Regionalliga Bayern in the first half of the season. The 18-year-old scored four goals and provided four assists. In the UEFA Youth League, he played three times for the Munich U19s (one goal).
Bayern Munich campus director Jochen Sauer, provided some brief commentary on the move.
“Nestory has integrated very well after his move from Australia to Europe and has repeatedly shown his great talent with our reserves. We’re convinced he’ll take the next sporting steps in the Swiss top tier at GC Zurich. We’ll continue to support him very closely on his journey,” Sauer said.
For Irankunda, the loan represents the opportunity to attack first-team football and prove his mettle.
“This is a great opportunity for me to further my development in the first Swiss division. I’m very happy to be at GC Zurich,” Irankunda noted (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Irankunda has not exactly lit the world on fire statistically and was battling for playing time with Bayern Munich II. Perhaps, this move will give him a jolt of energy and boost his performances for the rest of this campaign.
