The Houston Texans haven’t taken the leap many expected them to after their successful 2023 season, but the team has already clinched the AFC South.
By capturing the division, the Texans are guaranteed a playoff spot, though their ceiling could be limited as the offense has seemingly taken a step back.
Despite the addition of Joe Mixon in the backfield, quarterback C.J. Stroud has failed to capture the passing magic he displayed as a rookie.
Part of that is due to the offensive line play, which has been mediocre at best throughout the 2024 NFL season, though Stroud also hasn’t been as sharp throwing the football either.
There are times when it appears that Stroud is pressing as he deals with a pass rush, and that’s resulted in some ugly throws and interceptions.
In fact, with two interceptions against the Kansas City Chiefs, he’s more than doubled his total from his rookie season.
“5 interceptions entire rookie season, 11 interceptions through 16 weeks of sophomore season,” B/R Gridiron posted on X.
Is it just a Sophomore Slump for CJ Stroud? pic.twitter.com/Ri62EoV1Zt

Sophomore slumps aren’t uncommon in the NFL, especially for quarterbacks, as teams have far more film to work with.
There’s no denying that Stroud is still one of the best young quarterbacks in the league, though his decision-making could use some work.
The loss of wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a season-ending injury may have played a part in Stroud’s turnover issues, but he has other weapons, like Nico Collins and Tank Dell, to utilize.
Overall, Houston is in a good spot moving forward with Stroud, though the question is whether or not the interceptions are a blip or a concerning trend.
