IOWA CITY, Iowa– There it is. Des Moines native and Iowa Hawkeye Caitlin Clark is the all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball. The high-scoring all-time great surpassed current Las Vegas Ace star Kelsey Plum with 7:44 in the first quarter. Of course, it came from three-point range.
Clark’s journey began with a 27-point outburst against Northern Iowa in front of a bunch of cardboard cutouts. The audience went from literally non-existent into being the face of an entire sport. Clark’s ability to become a performer while being efficient has been a marvel for women’s basketball.
“You can’t help but watch where she is shooting from, the range, confidence and the flare. She is a performer,” NBA star Stephen Curry said on Wednesday. “It’s crazy though because her shot is like that and at that level. But if you really watch her floor game, it is just as impressive. She’s got the total package.”

Despite Monika Czinano and McKenna Warnock not returning to this year’s team. Clark has been even more unguardable than ever. Entering Thursday night, she was averaging 32.1 points on 47.3 percent shooting, including 39.3 percent from three-point range. She also is hauling in seven rebounds a game while dishing out a nation-leading 8.2 assists.
Her box-office ability had people paying thousands of dollars on Thursday night to watch her break the scoring record. With Clark, there’s an extra sense of pride. The five-star guard could have gone nearly anywhere in the country coming out of high school, but opted to remain in-state. She’s loyal and wanted to inspire the next generation to be even better than herself.
“I’m lucky enough that this isn’t my last time wearing an Iowa uniform,” Clark said. “I just appreciate what we did here and everything we were able to accomplish. I feel like the sky’s still the limit for myself and this program. It excites me that we’ve been able to build this and accomplish something like this.”
“I want my legacy to be the impact that I can have on young kids and the people in the state of Iowa, and I hope I brought them a lot of joy.”
The Carver-Hawkeye faithful waited for hours outside until doors opened for this historic Thursday night. There was a different energy in the air and it was almost destined that Clark would set the record in her home. While Clark has earned all of the rightful attention with her play, she wants to acknowledge those that helped pave the way for her to accomplish this record.
“(Kelsey Plum) was somebody that I kind of idolized, so it’s cool to kind of be in that position,” she previously said. “She’s somebody I even watch still in the WNBA as she plays for the Aces, has had a really successful career, and one of my favorite players.”
