Can Graham Potter get one over his former side? We look ahead to Monday’s Premier League clash with our Chelsea vs West Ham prediction and preview.
Chelsea vs West Ham Stats: The Key Insights
- The Opta supercomputer struggled to see anything other than a home win as Chelsea triumphed in 62.1% of pre-match simulations.
- No former Chelsea manager has won against the Blues at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League across 22 attempts.
- West Ham have won just one of their last 18 away league games against Chelsea.
Graham Potter returns to his former side as West Ham take on Chelsea in Monday night’s clash at Stamford Bridge.
Potter is set for a first meeting with his old club since being dismissed in April 2023. However, no former Chelsea manager has ever won against the Blues in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.
Indeed, eight former Chelsea bosses have tried their luck at their former home ground, and none have triumphed there in 22 attempts (D8 L14).
Potter will know his new team can ill afford a slow start on Monday, too, given West Ham have conceded nine Premier League goals in the opening 10 minutes of matches this season. That is two more than any other side and their most in a single campaign.
Chelsea, by contrast, have scored five goals in the opening 10 minutes – a tally only Brentford (six) could better heading into the weekend’s action. However, Enzo Maresca’s side have struggled for form of late.
They have lost three of their last six Premier League games (W1 D2), as many defeats as they had suffered in their previous 32 games combined (W19 D10 L3). That run from Boxing Day onwards leaves Chelsea 15th in the form table, nine places lower than their actual position.
Noni Madueke opened the scoring in their last outing, but his third-minute goal mattered for little as Manchester City roared back for a 3-1 win last Saturday. That was the fifth time across six league games since Christmas that Chelsea had opened the scoring, though they have only won one of those matches (D2 L2).
Maresca will know improvements are desperately needed in that respect, considering only struggling Tottenham (11) have dropped more points from winning positions across that period than Chelsea’s 10.
The Italian boss may hope that derby-day hero Nicolas Jackson can ease Chelsea’s woes. The striker has scored 11 goals in his last 14 Premier League matches against fellow London clubs, with that tally the most of any player in such derbies across the last two seasons.
One thing is for certain: Maresca will continue to rely on youthful exuberance rather than experience. Chelsea are the only top-flight side yet to give a single minute to a player aged over 30 this season. Their 23-match run without such a player featuring is the longest since Fulham in the 2020-21 campaign (30 games).
Potter’s side, meanwhile, managed a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last time out to leave them 14th in the table. Emerson’s second-half header cancelled out Jacob Ramsey’s early opener at Villa Park.
That draw was another outing without injured star Jarrod Bowen, but he could return on Monday, along with Crysencio Summerville, Lucas Paquetá and Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Mohammed Kudus will be another to keep an eye on given he has completed the most dribbles of any player in the 2024-25 competition (57). He has also successfully managed 6+ dribbles in three Premier League games this campaign, with only Man City’s Jérémy Doku doing so more often (4).
Chelsea vs West Ham Head-to-Head
Chelsea will fancy their chances at Stamford Bridge considering they have won their last two Premier League meetings with West Ham by an aggregate score of 8-0.
Jackson scored twice, along with a goal for Cole Palmer, as Chelsea eased to a 3-0 win over the Hammers in the reverse fixture this term.
Chelsea have not won three consecutive league matches against West Ham since doing so between 2010 and 2011, however.
That may change here, though, since West Ham have won just one of their last 18 Premier League away games against Chelsea (D4 L13), losing the last four in a row since a 1-0 win in November 2019.
Chelsea vs West Ham Prediction
