With more than half the 2024 college football season in the books, a new batch of standout players has emerged. Today, we’re highlighting college football’s best under-the-radar players.
It’s easy for the marquee names to dominate headlines, yet beneath the surface, several lesser-heralded athletes have been instrumental for their teams. These players aren’t going to make Heisman shortlists or warrant too much All-American attention, but their performances deserve recognition.
J.J. JONES, UNC WR
The Tar Heels haven’t seen much excitement on the field this season despite an impressive showing from running back Omarion Hampton, who leads the country with 126 rushing yards per game and is positioned to be a Day 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. J.J. Jones has quietly flown under the radar, having an impressive season as the top target, with 26 receptions for nearly 500 yards and an average of 19 yards per catch. Jones excels in the short to intermediate field and performs well in the middle and on tunnel screens. He has converted 20 catches for first downs and, with his big frame, makes contested catches and breaks arm tackles. He’s a solid, under-the-radar player who may not get the national attention he deserves.
THEO WEASE JR., MISSOURI WR
Luther Burden III is the name most associated with Missouri receivers, but Theo Wease has been a slightly more productive receiver for the Tigers this season. Wease has 37 catches for 482 yards, dominating in short-yardage situations. He’s shown suddenness in making defenders miss, with 95 yards after contact. Surprisingly, he’s only been targeted nine times on throws over 10 yards. Wease’s success comes from short comebacks, nakeds, shallows and slants, showcasing a solid season that could lead to opportunities at the next level.
