Will the SEC capture its fifth consecutive national championship in baseball this month at the College World Series? We like the league’s chances against the ACC’s best, which marks the first time since 1948 only two conferences are represented in Omaha. That’s southern flair at its finest and should provide another opportunity for SEC commissioner Greg Sankey to tout one of his schools — Florida, Kentucky, Texas A&M or Florida — as a diamond victor later this summer at media days ahead of football season.
The SEC’s four teams at the CWS all took varying paths to the big stage. Overall No. 1 seed Tennessee is the been-here-before favorites under Tony Vitello, who’s here for the third time in four years and vying for the first baseball national title in program history. Kentucky’s in Omaha for the first time while Texas A&M’s been one of the most consistent teams in college baseball throughout the season.
Then there’s Florida, which has the look of 2022 Ole Miss given the Gators’ red-hot streak in the postseason coming out of a mediocre spring as one of the last teams in the tournament.
