As a player with superstar striker status, Harry Kane is used to the weight of expectations. The Bayern Munich star has been prolific in front of goal in his first two seasons in Bavaria — but any time he doesn’t score, he faces accusations of disappearing from the game.
Is it a matter of lacking service? Just the life of a striker? Kane touched on dealing with the highs as well as the lows in a recent interview with L’Équipe.
“It’s true, this kind of games[sic] can be complicated but you have to be prepared for it because, sometimes, the configuration of things forces you to stay in the penalty box,” Kane replied when asked about games where he doesn’t manage to get many touches (as captured via @iMiaSanMia). “And there, you have to know how to stay very focused on the game, on the smallest movements, the smallest details, the smallest deflections, to spring forth at the right moment.
“Sometimes, some people think that an attacker does nothing when he doesn’t touch the ball a lot. On the contrary, you have to be very connected to the game. Because everything can be played out on a single ball. That is to say, you can go through a match in complete anonymity and, on a ball, become for a few seconds the best player in the world in the eyes of the public, even though in absolute terms this is not the case. That is the moment for which a striker works every minute, every day of every week.”
The life of a striker — more than a highlight reel. But Kane has plenty of those, too.
