OMAHA, Neb. — Dylan Dreiling stepped into the batter’s box at Charles Schwab Field on Sunday afternoon looking to keep Tennessee baseball’s season alive.
It was just the top of the seventh inning, but the Vols were 0-for-16 at the plate with runners on base and 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Tennessee trailed 1-0 as a result and desperately needed a critical knock.
Christian Moore led off the seventh with a walk. He made a smart baserunning decision to tag up to second base a batter later when Blake Burke hit a deep fly ball to centerfield. Billy Amick was unable to score Moore from second when he popped out on the first pitch.
It brought Dreiling to the plate in a critical late-game situation. Tennessee’s best player at the Men’s College World Series sat back in his swing and uncorked a belt-high 1-1 fastball over the UT bullpen. It gave the Vols their first lead of the weekend, 2-1.
Dreiling’s second home run in Omaha sparked a four-run rally for Tennessee in the seventh and eighth inning to come from behind and beat Texas A&M, 4-1, to even the CWS Finals at a game apiece.
Here are our takeaways from Tennessee’s (59-13) win over Texas A&M (53–14) in Game 2.
These takeaways will continue to be updated throughout postgame.
