James Tarkowski scored a dramatic late equaliser with the final kick of the game to deny Liverpool a vital Merseyside derby victory at Goodison Park. Look back at the best facts and Opta data on our Everton vs Liverpool stats page.
Liverpool moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but will be extremely disappointed to have not made it nine, as James Tarkowski scored a dramatic 98th-minute equaliser in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
Mohamed Salah thought he was once again the hero, assisting Alexis Mac Allister’s opening goal before scoring the winner 17 minutes from time after Beto had given Everton an early lead, but Tarkowski had other ideas. The Everton centre-back powered home with just seconds remaining to send the home crowd crazy.
Arne Slot broke history with his Liverpool team selection, as the Reds began without a single English player in their starting XI for the first time in the top-flight league history.
Everton came into this match on a three-game winning streak in the Premier League, with a feature of those victories being their fast starts in each game. They started well yet again, taking the lead just 11 minutes in after some quick thinking from Jarrad Branthwaite.
The defender threaded through an excellent pass from a free-kick inside his half, and with the Liverpool defence napping, Beto stole in to slot underneath Alisson and into the net.
It was Beto’s fourth goal of the season in the Premier League, surpassing his tally from last term (3), while it was the first time that he’d managed goals in back-to-back Premier League appearances since joining the club.
That lead would last only four minutes, however, with Mac Allister heading in his second Premier League goal of 2024-25. The Argentine midfielder expertly guided his header past Jordan Pickford following Salah’s cross.
Salah’s assist took him to 22 goal involvements away from home this season in the Premier League, breaking a competition record for a single player in away games across a single campaign.
He made that 23 with his goal in the 73rd minute, poking home from close range to extend another record. It was the ninth time that he’s both scored and assisted in a Premier League game in 2024-25. No other player has managed to do this in more than seven separate matches within a single campaign. That goal was Liverpool’s first shot on target in the second half.
Tarkowski had the final say, however. With only seconds of the game remaining, the ball found the Englishman at the back post following Tim Iroegbunam’s flick-on and he made no mistake, slamming home a loose, bouncing ball before diving into the Everton fans behind the goal in celebration.
There was even more drama after the final whistle, as players from both sides clashed and referee Michael Oliver dismissed both Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucouré for second yellows, while Liverpool boss Slot was also given a red card.
The final Merseyside derby moment at Goodison Park fittingly turned out to be a memorable one.
