FAU center Vladislav Golden entered college basketball’s transfer portal on Monday per 247Sports’ Travis Branham, a move that happened a week after Dusty May — Goldin’s former coach — took the Michigan vacancy. Goldin is 7-foot-1 and averaged 15.7 points, 6.9 rebounds this season for the Owls, who were an early exit from the NCAA Tournament after reaching the Final Four last season under May.
Michigan’s in the market for portal talent at several positions, including center, and enhancing the Wolverines’ roster is one of May’s top priorities in his infancy in Ann Arbor. He replaces Juwan Howard following six seasons with the Owls, including consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and the best record in program history last season after FAU won 35 games and reached the Final Four.
Given Michigan’s 24 losses this season under Howard, May accepted quite an undertaking at a program capable of great success after showing it previously during March Madness. It starts with getting athletes that fit his system at Michigan through recruiting and the transfer portal and instilling a new mindset for the Wolverines.
Michigan beat out several other college basketball vacancies for May’s services and appear to have made this cycle’s most notable hire up to this point.
May likes to go with quick, guard-heavy action offensively and his teams have been known to get after it at the other end of the floor. He calls it “structured chaos”, as described here from The Michigan Insider’s initial report of May’s hire.
At FAU this season, Goldin was a serious threat in the paint and on the offensive glass.
In the first year of the portal windows, the college basketball transfer portal began on March 13 and run through May 11. Numerous graduate transfers entered the transfer portal prior to the March 13 opening, but that date kicked off the 60-day window for the rest of the prospective transfers to hop in the portal to examine their options. The one-time transfer rule is still intact, per usual. If a player has not transferred yet, they are immediately eligible.
