Bayern Munich has been having a tough time against Bayer Leverkusen lately. In their past six matchups, Bayern has emerged victorious once, in September 2022 (Bundesliga). Leverkusen has won three of the six, with two games ending in a draw. A big reason for that is a certain Florian Wirtz pulling the strings for the reigning Bundesliga Champions in attack.
That being said, facing Bayern has never been easy for the phenom. In a recent Sky Sport interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Wirtz concedes that the reason for that is facing Alphonso Davies. When asked about the toughest player he’s faced, Wirtz revealed, “I had to play against him when I played my first games. It wasn’t easy.”
Understandable.
Imagine bypassing the entire opposition midfield line with a slick move and being through on goal only to notice a blur in the periphery of your vision, and before you know it, you’ve been tackled and dispossessed. Meep meep, m*therf***ers.
It must be quite demoralizing for a young and coming attacker to face a locked-in Phonzie. But Wirtz seems to have done quite well for himself and embraced the challenge. Nevertheless, he could always choose to join forces and team up with his toughest challenge to become unstoppable, couldn’t he?
Oh wait. Davies’ contract ends this summer. Welp.
