The PXG Allan putter is a high-performance mallet-style putter designed to enhance consistency and control. It incorporates PXG’s Zero Torque Balance Technology which minimizes twisting and keeps the face square during the stroke. PXG says the “Allan putter puts the laws of physics to work for you with Zero Torque Balance Technology that keeps your putter face square and on target and is amazingly effective for players of all abilities and all stroke types.” The company claims “PXG’s new Allan putter performs so well, it feels like magic.”
Did the hype live up to the results for the testers? Read on to find out! But, first, let’s review some of the key features of the Allan.
Construction
Made from a combination of 303 stainless steel and 6061 aluminum.
Includes a hollow body and an ultra-thin face with PXG’s S-COR polymer to dampen vibrations and improve feel.
Alignment and Stability
Features a unique S-hosel design, aligning the shaft above the center of gravity to reduce torque.
A large aluminum alignment aid helps line up putts effectively, though it may feel unconventional at first.
Forgiveness and Feel
Offers strong forgiveness across the face with redistributed weight increasing MOI (moment of inertia).
The new pyramid-face pattern promotes consistent ball roll and the feel is described as firm yet soft at impact.
Additional Features
Includes adjustable sole weights for swing weight customization.
A convenient ball retrieval feature on the sole adds practical utility.
Who should use it
The PXG Allan putter is ideal for golfers seeking stability and consistency, especially those who struggle with maintaining a square face through impact. However, it requires some adaptation for golfers switching from more traditional putter designs.
Read on to see what our testers thought about the fitting and performance of PXG Allan putters.
Key highlights
- The Fitting Process: Testers found the fitting process with PXG to be a premium experience with a nice high-tech facility, good putting surface and plenty of grip, shaft and head weight options to match up to their putting stroke and preferences.
- First Impressions: Overall first impressions were positive with many testers praising PXG for quick shipping, a premium unboxing experience and a well-crafted putter with attention to the small details.
- Looks and Feel: Testers generally praised the Allan putter for its solid feel and loved the long uninterrupted alignment aid in the design. They also enjoyed the milling lines and craftsmanship shown from the manufacturing process for the Allan putter.
- Performance: All of our testers saw strong performance in practice and on the putting surface. Many testers reported seeing improvement in Strokes Gained or total putts per round.
The fitting
Testers headed to their local PXG retail store and went through a full fitting for the Allan putter. They noted the premium experience and setup with knowledgeable and qualified fitters.
TheOther1 said, “I spent almost an hour putting and trying out grips, lengths, and weights.” He also noted that both his gamer and the Allan putter were put into the zero torque spotter and he got to see the magic of the Allan in action. Also he mentioned that Matt, his fitter, “told me the story of PXG and its philosophy.”
Musicalmedicine added “to put it simply, a PXG fitting is second to none. During my fitting I was in a bay that is focused on putting. I really appreciate that PXG was intentional in setting up this area to ensure that the most used stick in the bag gets the attention it deserves. For as silly as it may sound, having the surrounding wall wrapped in a picture of the 18th hole of Scottsdale National added more to the experience than I would have expected.”
GolfSpy_BOS had a great fitting experience as well. He had a long talk with his master fitter and rolled several different combinations of shaft, grip and weights until he settled on a heavy head and flatter lie angle. From start to finish, everything about his stop at PXG Boston was a premium experience that made him feel confident in the PXG Allan’s ability to deliver on the greens.
Aesthetics
Testers loved the design and build of the Allan putter. They noted the top-notch finish and fine milling details on the head. Some testers had to adjust to the shaft and hosel orientation but no one had difficulty after rolling a few putts.
Quigleyd said, “the general shape, as said to me, is Spider-esque. I think that it is smart to go with a recognizable and somewhat familiar shape. It is not funky or outlandish in any way.”
TheOther1 added that “looking down the shaft at address is a little different. I love the appearance of the clubhead. The alignment line helps get you on the right path, especially if paired with an alignment stripe on a ball.”
VernL4 said, “I honestly like the look of the Allan. Is it different? Yes, but I’m totally fine with it.” He also noted that “there are some beautiful lines on the sole and the top of the club. The alignment line that goes all the way from face to the back is an excellent feature. I also went with the all-black M16 shaft. It looks good! All-in-all, it’s an outstanding design.”
Musicalmedicine commented that “of the PXG putters that I looked at while at PXG, the Allan seemed to be the tamest of the bunch, while still maintaining the clear PXG feel. It is a very nice-looking putter, that catches the eye without standing out as being gaudy. Your eye is quickly drawn the full-length alignment line at address, leaving zero question where the club is lined up to.”
GolfSpy_BOS said, “Looking at the finishing of the Allan putter, you can see that PXG puts a lot of effort into fit and finish. With the Allan in particular, the S-Hosel is really well done, and connects very cleanly to the head and black M16 shaft.”
On-course feedback
Testers reported improved performance on the putting green and enjoyed the alignment features as well as the torque-free performance of the Allan putter. While some saw minimal gains or similar performance to their gamer, most saw a statistical improvement.
Quigleyd: “I was averaging about 33 putts/round with about 1-2 3 putts. Since putting the Allen in play, that number dropped to 30.”
TheOther1: “I’m not a world-class putter, but I can tell you this: while using the PXG Allan putter, I am almost always closer to the cup than with my other putter. My dispersion is typically tighter and I have better distance control. The PXG Allan seems to have only one good place to strike the ball, anywhere on the face!”
VernL4: “We all want a lower score. I feel that the Allan shines in this aspect. I came into this test knowing that my lifetime average is 2.1 putts per hole. In general, I feel like putting is the only strong part of my golf game. In the five rounds I was able to play with the Allan, I averaged 1.7 PPH. That’s an average savings of 7 strokes per round!”
Musicalmedicine was able to get on Trackman and said the “data suggests a perfect score with very consistent speed, skid distance, and side movement, but this set is limited. Although not quantified, some of my experience practicing with this putter suggests that it is not perfect. I also did note in one of my Forum posts that it feels that I need to hit the Allan ever so slightly towards the toe to really hit the sweet spot of this club.”
GolfSpy_BOS found that “clean-up duty felt rather automatic on anything less than 5 feet. Between the alignment aid being super easy to square up and the Zero Torque tech helping to maintain a square face, putts were falling almost every time.”
What they liked
TheOther1: “I like the heft of this putter. I usually leave putts short, so at the fitting we played around with weights to get a weight that would help with distance.”
VernL4: “The club has an excellent feel and it gives you confidence when lining up for a putt. When you get comfortable and confident with the Allan, it’s a wonderful thing.”
Musicalmedicine: “Did I mention how fantastic the PXG fitting experience is? Just to make it clear, PXG does an incredible job making your fitting an “experience”. Another topic not specifically related to the Allan, and more about PXG as a company is their commitment to making all of their gear available for lefties and righties.”
GolfSpy_BOS found the fit and finish of the PXG Allan to be top-notch. The clean milling lines and small details show a level of precision and care some OEMs skimp on. He also noted that the shape and long alignment aid made it very easy to set up.
What they didn’t like
TheOther1 did not have much to complain about but did notice “in wet conditions, grass clippings tend to get into the Pick-Up Pocket on the underside. It was easy to clean out, just different from a flat-bottom putter.” Considering that was the worst he could come up with, the Allan seems to be doing really well.
VernL4 said the “only negative I have about this club’s appearance is the backward lean of the shaft. It took about nine holes on the first round I played with it to get used to. I had to work on focusing on the line along the top of the club and forget about the weird angle of the shaft. Once you can get past that, all is well.”
Musicalmedicine found that the “ball grabber is not great. Now before one of you says ‘I drain all my putts, I don’t need that’, let’s be real. We all need it sometimes. Whether it be while practicing and putting 100+ times in the day, or during a casual game where gimmes are the norm, having a way to retrieve the ball without having to bend over is unnecessary, but a feature you don’t want to go without once you have it. That said, the way PXG implemented this leaves quite a bit to be desired.”
GolfSpy_BOS added his only slight issue with the Allan is that “I am still getting used to the feel. I was thinking that some outdoor greens would clear it up, but there is still something there I’m just not quite getting along with.”
Conclusion
With three of the five testers keeping the Allan in the bag, you might think the reviews were mixed on this putter but that is hardly the case. Our two testers not putting it in the bag were still surprised by the strong performance of the Allan but each saw minor performance or preference differences from their well-fit gamers. The three testers keeping this putter in the bag have seen significant improvement in their putting since bagging the Allan.
Here is what some of the testers had to say at the conclusion of testing:
TheOther1: “You’ll have to break in and steal this putter to keep me from using it every time I play! I’ve seen good progress in my putting and feel this putter is for me. Had I tested this putter in a store, I would have added it to my Christmas list.”
VernL4: “The Allan is a beautiful club that gave me great results on the course. It feels great when you swing it. ‘It’s not magic, it’s physics’ are words that ring true with me. The price tag is steep, but if you can do it, I think you will be in for a sweet reward. As for me, The Allan has definitely earned a spot in my bag!”
Musicalmedicine: “I’ve been dreading getting to this part of the review. Over the past seven weeks the majority of my putting has been with the Allan, it has performed really well most of the time. On occasion it has saved a hole or two for me. On the flip side, if the Allan leaves the bag, the DF3 makes its way back in. I’ve had some good putts with the Allan, but I have had some great putts with the DF3.”
