The New York Giants reached another new low on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium, falling to the New Orleans Saints, 14-11, after their special teams unit left 13 points on the field.
Not only did they have a punt return for a touchdown and a field goal negated by separate penalties, but they also watched helplessly as the Saints blocked a game-tying field goal attempt with just seconds remaining.
The embarrassing way in which the Giants lost the game was secondary only to the fan protest before the game, where a chartered plane circled the stadium with a banner reading, “Mr. Mara, enough. Please fix this dumpster fire.”
Then, of course, there was a literal dumpster fire in the parking lot. Can’t make this stuff up.
Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ Week 14 loss.
Offensive snaps: 78
Defensive snaps: 68
Special teams snaps: 29
Given the team’s overswell of injuries, snap counts were a bit off on Sunday. However, perhaps nothing was stranger than quarterback Tommy DeVito taking a single snap in the middle of a drive for no apparent reason.
“We had a few plays for Tommy this game. We only got to the one. It happened to be a kind of zone read, but it wasn’t just all zone reads. It was a few plays in there,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters after the game.
O…kay…
Also of note, rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers took 73 snaps despite pre-game reports suggesting he could have a “limited role” due to a multitude of injuries.
Defensively, rookie safety Tyler Nubin took just 36 defensive snaps after getting injured, ending his streak of games in which he took 100 percent of the snaps.
