New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has made it clear that changes will likely be made to the quarterback room this offseason.
Whether it comes via free agency or through the 2024 NFL draft, there will be bodies added. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a Daniel Jones replacement.
Schoen reaffirmed his “faith” in Jones on Tuesday at the NFL Combine but left open all options at the position. He then made an interesting comment about the depth of the quarterback prospect pool and how some project as backups in the NFL.
“It’s a good quarterback draft. It’s not just at the top. There are some guys that are mid-levels that I think will be good number twos. There are some guys that can be number threes in the draft,” Schoen said. “So yeah, I mean, I think it’s a solid draft all over.”
Conventional wisdom suggests that not every rookie quarterback will turn into a starter but it’s rare to hear a general manager discuss potential backups in the draft.
With so much focus on the top guys — who are likely to elude the Giants sans a trade up — it feels noteworthy that Schoen is publicly addressing the second and third tiers. It also implies that he and the Giants have considered mid- or late-round quarterbacks if they are unable to land a big name in Round 1.
It’s beginning to appear inevitable that the Giants do select a quarterback at some point in April, but at which point in the draft?
