For Bayern Munich and players that have current contracts set to expire this summer, all the focus has been placed on Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich. The trio of players are all in the midst of key contract negotiations as the club expends their best efforts to get all of them to agree to new deals, which is looking more likely rather than not at this juncture.
Leroy Sané, Eric Dier, Sven Ulreich, and Thomas Müller all also have contracts set to expire after the conclusion of this season, but the key three players (Musiala, Davies, Kimmich) are taking top priority for the club’s front office. Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are spearheading the efforts to get the deals done as soon as they can, but that does not stop the rest of the squad planning moving forward.
For the case of Dier, English compatriot and teammate Harry Kane recently expressed the opinion that the defender should stay at Bayern beyond the end of this season. “Eric’s been great, he’s been waiting patiently. He’s come in the last couple of games and done really, really well, and got two clean sheets, so, yeah, of course I’d love Eric to stay,” the striker explained after the 3-2 win over VfL Wolfsburg last weekend (Daily Mail).
While Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae have been Vincent Kompany’s preferred center back pairing when they are both fully fit, Dier has stood firm to the task when the Belgian manager has called upon him. He recently started and played the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach as well as the 5-0 home win over TSG Hoffenheim. In total this season, he has clocked 395 minutes from a total of 11 appearances across all competitions. Last season, he was used to starting a lot more frequently under Thomas Tuchel, as the current England boss showed a preference to using Dier alongside either Kim or Upamecano.
To continue, Kane added that the decision to possibly extend Dier beyond the end of this season is up to the club and the player at this point. “I guess that’s between him and the club, I haven’t had any conversations with him, so we’ll have to see. He did really well when he played. Eric and I get on very well. But we haven’t talked about his future. That’s a matter between him and the club,” the England skipper explained.
With how well he has been able to perform in his reduced minutes, it could certainly be worthwhile for Bayern to offer Dier at least a one-year contract extension, especially since he is only earning roughly five million euros per year.
