Longtime Liverpool FC head coach Jürgen Klopp turned heads when he stepped down at the end of last season — and turned even more when, instead of taking another coaching gig or even a full season off, he signed on to become Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull.
The move puts Klopp in charge of overseeing a footballing operation that spans clubs as wide as Leipzig, New York, and Salzburg.
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann weighed in, too.
“I congratulate Oliver Mintzlaff on this outstanding coup. I also congratulate Jürgen on an outstanding job. It’s a very interesting job that Jürgen will fill with a lot of life with his style. It’s a win win for both sides,” Nagelsmann said in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia.
One of the jobs Klopp was rumored to be up for was Nagelsmann’s own — particularly if Bayern Munich found a way to lure the manager they sacked in 2022 back after the summer’s EURO 2024 tournament. Instead Nagelsmann committed to sign on until at least the 2026 Men’s World Cup.
But could Klopp still be on the radar in the distant future for Germany? Would he available via a release clause? Nagelsmann did not bite on such topics.
“I know Oliver Mintzlaff very well. I can’t imagine that there’s a clause in the contract. I’ll ask, then I’ll think about how to answer,” the current Germany coach added.
