The New York Giants dropped their 10th straight game on Sunday, the longest such streak in franchise history, falling to the Atlanta Falcons and rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr., 34-7.
What more needs to be said? What else can even be said? We’ve officially run out of words.
As we enter Week 17, here’s a look at where the Giants place in a multitude of power rankings.
Welp. With the No. 1 pick of the 2025 draft nearly in hand, perhaps their second century of existence will begin much better than the way the first one is ending.
The Giants faced a rookie QB making his first NFL start. They went out and let the Falcons defense outscore them. Bad news.
Nabers set the team’s rookie receptions record Sunday, passing two pretty good players in Odell Beckham Jr. and Saquon Barkley with his 92nd catch of the season. “Kudos to me but … we didn’t win,” Nabers said afterward. He’s doing damage in a difficult situation as the Giants and their offense stumble to the finish line. Nabers is now at 97 catches for 969 yards with two games remaining. So he’s almost certainly going to top 100 catches and 1,000 yards, albeit while leading the league in targets (155) and averaging just 10 yards per catch.
Vinnie Iyer, The Sporting News:
The Giants are playing out the string with whoever is at QB, but they need to do a lot of fixing everywhere on defense. Having a good pass rush means little when everything else breaks down.
The Giants are the NFL’s lone two-win team and they do not look like a team that’s capable of winning again this season. The Giants aren’t tanking, they’re just horrible. It will likely lead them to the first overall draft pick and an important choice at quarterback.
On one hand, I want to empathize with backup quarterback Drew Lock after his turnovers this week. When I play on All-Madden difficulty, I’m liable to make a couple of boneheaded throws and have some generally awful pocket management—even against the worst defenses in the game. New York’s offense has gotten so dry and uninspiring that even the throws targeting Malik Nabers don’t create much reaction from fans or fear in defenses anymore. With the Giants currently holding on to the first pick in the upcoming draft, though, the organization is probably just fine with that.
Alex Kennedy, Pro Football Network:
This has been a season to forget for New York. The Giants lost their 10th consecutive game on Sunday, losing to the Falcons 34-7.
Fortunately for the Giants, the Raiders defeated the Jaguars in Week 16, so New York has a great shot of landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. PFN’s model currently gives New York 41.3% odds of landing the top selection.
It will be interesting to see if the Giants part ways with head coach Brian Daboll. While he’s had some tough outings, plenty of franchises would love to hire him if New York fires him.
