The Premier League season is a staple part of a football fan’s year.
For supporters, there is nothing better than a brand new campaign beginning and the emotional rollercoaster of the following months.
We’re now past the halfway mark in the current top-flight season, but there are still a lot of matches to play until the title race and relegation battle reach their climax.
Here’s the total amount of games each team has to play…
How many matches are in a Premier League season?
There are 38 games in a typical Premier League campaign.
This has been the case every year since the 1995/96 season.

20 teams are in the league and they all play eachother twice, once at home and once away.
So each side has to play two games against 19 different opponents, meaning by the end of a season they will have played 38 matches.
The 38-game schedule is usually played over 10 months, beginning in August and ending in May, with December and January typically the busiest period of the campaign.
Fixtures are also spread out to incorporate cup competitions and international breaks.
As previously mentioned though, this hasn’t always been the format of the Premier League.
In the first three years of the division being created, between 1992 and 1995, there were 22 teams involved instead.
And similarly to now, teams would have to play an opponent home and away, but with the extra two sides in the league, it meant there were 42 fixtures in total.
That changed in 1995 and there are no suggestions that the Premier League won’t remain a 20-team and 38-fixture league for the foreseeable future.
There’s no doubt that as the games pass in a season, the more exciting things get, and the 24/25 campaign is starting to get tasty.
