There was an immediate level of trust for Newberry (Fla.) High’s Mykah Newton from the moment NC State offered, and it played a significant role in the Wolfpack landing the 6-foot-2, 255-pound edge rusher.
The relationship that Newberry coach Ed Johnson had with Wolfpack defensive line coach Charley Wiles helped close the gap with Newton’s other finalists, Michigan State and UCF, both of which offered months earlier.
“Coach Wiley’s brother used to coach against my coach so they knew each other,” Newton said. “Also, they recruited another player from our school in Cory Durden so coach Johnson always knew coach Wiles. They always had that type of connection and that really had (an impact) with me.”
