Cameron Rising, who led Utah to back-to-back Pac-12 titles in 2021 and 2022, is no longer on the team’s roster after a series of injuries have kept him sidelined for the better part of the last two seasons.
According to Steve Bartle, Utah insider for KSL Sports, head coach Kyle Whittingham said on Tuesday that he has “talked with Cam a few times,” but confirmed that “he’s no longer on our roster.”
Rising began his collegiate career at Texas in 2018. In his two most productive seasons at Utah in 2021 and 2022, he passed for a combined 5,527 yards with 46 TDs and 13 interceptions. He rushed for an additional 964 yards and 12 TDs during that time. He missed the entire 2023 season due to multiple torn knee ligaments. Rising only appeared in three games during the 2024 season because of an injury to his throwing hand.
In his most recent full season in 2022, Rising showcased what he could do with at least one TD in all but one game, including nine games with multiple TDs.
The question now is whether Rising chooses to enter the portal or the NFL Draft. Due to some redshirt seasons, the COVID-19 waiver in 2020 and a series of injuries, he still has one year of eligibility remaining. If Rising does, however, elect to enter the portal, he will not be able to do so until at least April 16 when the spring transfer window opens.
Regardless of his decision, Rising has proven what he can do when he is healthy. Whatever he chooses to do over the next few months, staying healthy is paramount as he looks for the opportunity to display his talents once again and overcome the various setbacks he has experienced since his most productive seasons.
